In my opinion, eye exercises are the most compelling tool we have for natural vision improvement.
Three years ago I decided to find out for myself whether eye exercises really work - so I purchased the most popular course online, called Rebuild Your Vision.
I've since reviewed half a dozen other courses in the making of this website. This one remains my favorite for its simplicity and ease of use. Uniquely, it guarantees dramatic improvement within 30 days (or your money back). So I decided to put this to the test.
Firstly, I'll explain what eye exercises are and exactly how they work. Then I'll share my personal results with them.
What Are Eye Exercises?
Eye exercises are flexing and relaxing routines which aim to stimulate integral eye muscles for 20 minutes per day. The aim is to use your eyes in ways that modern everyday life cause you to forget. It overcomes laziness (wearing glasses all day long) and re-trains your eyes and cognitive vision to perform better, leading to better vision without glasses.
Within days or weeks, you should notice improvements in your natural vision. Thing can begin to appear crisper and sharper. Depending upon how bad your vision problems are to begin with, it may take just one month or several months to reach your vision goal. And once you have achieved healthy vision without glasses, you can stop doing eye exercises. Although it is advised you do one 20-minute session a month to maintain your vision health.
I've studied many eye exercise courses and found numerous variations you can use to combat your nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism or aging vision. (These eye exercises can't treat strabismus, glaucoma, or any other structural eye disorder.) At the end of this article I'll give you an example of an eye exercise so you can see how it works.
My Starting Eyesight
Before starting eye exercises, I got my vision tested by an optometrist. My prescription was -3.25 diopters (left) and -3.00 diopters (right) with astigmatism. That is about 20/150 vision (or moderate nearsightedness) and it was my goal to reach 20/40 or better.
I understood that I was probably middle-of-the-range in terms of my poor vision. I had worn glasses almost permanently for the last 15 years (since I was a 10-year-old girl in school). I wore my glasses all day at the computer. And I was never able to wear contact lenses; I was too squeamish for that (the same reason I always balked at the idea of laser eye surgery).
So, my starting point was moderate myopia. What could Rebuild Your Vision do for me?
Days 1-3
On the first day, I performed the eye exercises in my living room for 20 minutes, then rested my eyes for 5 minutes as per the instructions. Honestly, I felt nothing was different.
The second day was the same story. I felt positive about doing the eye exercises but I couldn't see any improvement in my vision.
On the third day something really cool happened. I was sitting in my living room - without my glasses on, as the course recommended - and suddenly realized I could read some of the book titles on the shelf at the other side of the room.
Now, my living room isn't huge, but the books were at least six feet away. Some of the fonts were still tiny and blurry but some were perfectly readable. That was the moment I realized something amazing: I have control over my own vision.
Days 4-21
As the days went by I experienced more and more flashes of clear vision.
I tried to go without my glasses as much as possible, and it was during those times that my vision worked for me. I would be looking out over the garden from my deck and could suddenly make out all the leaves in the trees. The effect would last maybe 20 seconds then would fade away. This just showed that my eyes were trying to see better and it was all due to the new training schedule. I had never experienced anything like it before.
During this middle phase I was also very aware of how far away I could stand and still read the eye chart supplied by Rebuild Your Vision. On day 1, I sat the minimum 7 feet away and could barely distinguish the giant E at the top. By day 21, I sat 12 feet away and could now read the second, third, fourth and fifth rows on the eye chart. Big difference.
Days 22-30
As day 30 approached, I knew that I could easily claim a dramatic improvement in my vision. However I also knew I wasn't going to reach my goal of 20/40 vision in under one month. That was slightly disappointing (especially as I tend to set the bar high) but I faced the fact that my vision would continue to improve with training. It was only a matter of time.
I also had the desire to go to an optometrist and get my vision tested to measure just how much my eyesight had improved. But at the same time I wanted to hold out for the most mind-blowing, in-your-face result I was capable of. I wanted to tell people there was no doubt at all that eye exercises work and I was the definitive case study for it. So I held out.
Days 31-44
As it happened, nature took its course. By day 31, I was wearing my old full-strength glasses to drive when I started getting pounding headaches. I felt like I was going cross-eyed. I finally decided this was my cue to see my optometrist and get an updated pair of lenses.
After an extensive eye exam, she gave me the result. "Good news, your prescription is reduced," she said. That was a first for me in 15 years.
My left eye was now at -2.25 diopters, my right eye at -2.00 diopters, and my astigmatism had reduced as well. I had eliminated 1 diopter off each eye in a few weeks of training.
Looking back at my prescription records, that was about SEVEN YEARS worth of visual deterioration. For me, it was official: blurry vision can be undone.
Quick Tip - Downgrading Your Glasses
At this point, my optometrist said my old glasses were far too strong and I needed a weaker prescription. The in-house range of frames and lenses would set me back around $300. But I had a better idea.
I took my new prescription home and went to $39Glasses.com. I picked out a nice basic frame (Roma) and entered my new prescription. Soon, I received my new weaker glasses to use for driving at minimal cost. This was important because I knew I would outgrow them in a few weeks...
Days 45-60
I kept going with my daily eye exercises. It was easy now; I'd fallen into a routine of doing them after lunch while listening to the TV or music in the background. I'm lucky that I work from home so I had plenty of opportunities to do my training. If you go out to work or school, I definitely recommend doing your 20-minute session in the morning before heading out. By the evening, your eyes are at their most stressed and eye exercises will be harder.
By day 60, I was in a very good place with my eyesight. I could sit 20 feet away from the eye chart and read the bottom line ("made in China" - no not that line...) I believed I had reached my goal of 20/40 visual acuity and just needed one more eye doctor visit to prove it.
My new optometrist (a man who supports vision training) gave me the good news: my left eye was now -1.25 diopters, my right eye -1.00. Below this level, you don't need glasses - in fact, they don't make glasses weaker than -1.00 diopter. And while my left eye was slightly weaker than my right eye, this is normal and affects everyone to some degree.
My nearsightedness was all but eliminated. What's more, I had completely eradicated my astigmatism. It simply wasn't there anymore. Result!
The Bottom Line
Three years ago (this all happened back in 2008) I went from being a long term sufferer of nearsightedness, to having clear vision without glasses, in precisely two months. Now I get to do all kinds of outdoor activities without glasses, something I had only ever dreamed of until that point.
My eyesight improved from 20/150 acuity to 20/40 acuity completely naturally - without any expensive laser treatment and the serious risks associated with it. In maintaining healthy vision habits and doing a 20-minute tone-up once a month, this has been a sustained improvement in my vision.
And I'm pretty disgusted that no optometrist ever told me about it.
Eye exercises work because they are habit forming. They teach you to use your natural focus far more than you currently bother to do while wearing glasses or contact lenses. Like any muscle in your body - even like your brain - if you stop using it, it becomes weak. That's what has happened to your eyesight over the years. So what are you going to do about it?

The Rebuild Your Vision training manual is the "meat and potatoes" of the course. It contains everything you need to know about eye exercises, guiding you through:
The 8 step-by-step eye exercises - which affected me in just 3 days. (Page 41)
The 7 essential keys to better vision - just one or two of these tips could prevent you from needing stronger prescriptions ever again. (Page 31)
The 3 customized eye exercise routines - like having your own personal trainer, this will ensure your time isn't wasted on eye exercises that don't apply to you. (Page 71)
How eye exercises work - so you can understand how to forge good vision habits and naturally improve your vision for years to come. (Page 21)
The causes of poor vision - to help prevent further vision loss in future. (Page 14)
The charts and tools are the "weights and treadmills" of the Rebuild Your Vision program. They include:
5 low-gloss laminated eye charts - to eliminate glare and keep them intact wherever you take them.
A custom eye patch - so you can train each eye individually, which is vital if one eye is slightly weaker is than the other (as is quite common).
A focus string - to improve your focus and help your eyes work together, an important skill in focusing known as accommodation.
A carrying case - so you can take the program wherever you go.
Bonus Eye Vitamins
When you place your order for Rebuild Your Vision, you may be given the chance to grab a free one-month supply of their Ocu-Plus Formula. I recommend you take it.
Your eyes will likely be under more stress during vision training and so a daily eye vitamin supplement will give them all the nutrients needed to rebuild and repair themselves.
There's no way you can get all 17 nutrients into a natural diet (unless you plan to consume 10,000 calories a day). So it's seriously worth considering as a way to nourish your eyes.
A Free Eye Exercise
Earlier I promised to show you a free eye exercise so you can sample the training without leaving this page. Here it is - my favorite:
Step 1: Relax and adjust your chair so that you are 12-24 inches from the computer monitor at eye level. If the image is not perfectly clear, that's ok, as long as you can see roughly.
Step 2: Hold a pen vertically between the two circles approximately 1 inch from the screen. The top of the pen should be at the same level as the image.
Step 3: Focus on the top of the pen as you slowly bring it toward your face. As you bring the pen closer to your face you will notice the two circles gradually merge to become three circles. When the three circles are all the same shape and proportion, stop moving the pen. It may be a little blurry to start with, but the image will sharpen when you get used to focusing this way.
Step 4: Try to shift your focus from the pen to the center circle. This may be difficult at first. (If you have trouble doing this, refer to the troubleshooting tips below.)
Step 5: Once you can focus on the center circle, move your pen away while maintaining your focus. Try to see the center circle as clearly as possible. As you increase your focus you will notice that the center circle becomes three-dimensional. It will look as if you were peering down into a Styrofoam cup.
Step 6: Your final goal for Level 1 is to look at the two circles and create the three circles (with the center one appearing three-dimensional) without using your pen at all. Once you can easily achieve this, proceed to Level 2 as described in the Rebuild Your Vision daily training routine. There are two more stages to this eye exercise, each building in what you have learnt so far.
Troubleshooting This Exercise
Tip #1: If you have trouble creating the third circle... Move closer or farther from the monitor. Also, your eyes may have become tired very quickly, so briefly look away or close your eyes (and cup them) and allow them to relax until you can imagine distant stars in the night sky.
Tip #2: If you see four circles... Bring the pen closer to your face and keep your eyes focused on it. This should transform the four circles into three. Another option is to move a few inches farther from the monitor.
Tip #3: If you cannot focus on the center circle... If you can see the center circle but have trouble focusing on it without the pen, be assured that this is normal when you're first performing this eye exercise. Focus on the top of the pen, then slowly look over it at the center circle. Keep going back and forth between the two until you are able to focus on the center circle without the pen. It may take a few days to master.
This is one of the more complex eye exercises in the course, and for me, the most fascinating. As you progress through the different levels you'll really get a grasp of how much your vision is improving, and how much easier it becomes to fulfil each day.
